PATHWAYS TO LICENSURE

School Pathway

Training Hours: 750

Applicants must be at least 17 and have an education equivalent to completion of the ninth grade. For training begun on or after July 1, 2024, the school pathway requires 750 hours at a licensed cosmetology school, followed by the theory and practical examinations. Out-of-state applicants must provide license verification; substantially equivalent credentials may qualify without examination, while other applicants may need examinations or qualifying work-experience credit.

Apprenticeship Pathway

Training Hours: 750

The registered apprenticeship pathway requires 750 hours over at least six months in a licensed cosmetology establishment that renders skin-care services. Training must be supervised by an active Michigan licensee, is limited to 40 hours per week, and apprenticeship hours do not transfer to or from school hours. An apprentice may work on the public after completing one-quarter of the required curriculum, must complete the examinations after training, and may not receive compensation.
